Find out why July\u2019s full Moon is called the Buck Moon and learn about the penumbral eclipse that will occur on this date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>WHEN TO SEE THE FULL MOON IN JULY\u00a02020<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Full Buck Moon on the\u00a04th<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>July\u2019s full Moon\u00a0will rise after sunset in the evening of\u00a0<strong>Saturday, July 4<\/strong>, before reaching peak illumination at 12:44\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">A.M.<\/span>\u00a0Eastern Time\u00a0on Sunday, July 5. Look towards the southeast to watch it rise above the horizon.\u00a0 How fun for our bright satellite to join\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/content\/independence-day-fourth-of-july\">Independence Day<\/a>\u00a0fireworks in the night\u00a0sky!<\/p>\n<p>Consult our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/astronomy\/moon-rise-and-set\">Moonrise and Moonset Calculator<\/a>\u00a0to see when the Buck Moon will be visible in your\u00a0area!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch (Very) Closely for a Penumbral\u00a0Eclipse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/content\/full-moon-june\">last month<\/a>, this month\u2019s full Moon brings with it a\u00a0<strong>penumbral eclipse<\/strong>, which occurs when the Moon crosses through the faint outer edge of Earth\u2019s shadow (the penumbra), making part of\u00a0the Moon appear ever-so-slightly darker than usual. Unlike a full lunar or solar eclipse, the visual effect of a penumbral eclipse is usually so minimal that\u00a0it can be difficult to perceive at all. For this eclipse, only a small portion of the Moon will cross into the penumbra, making it even more difficult to\u00a0see.<\/p>\n<p>This eclipse will be visible from most of North America, except in the northernmost regions of Canada and Alaska. It will begin at 11:04\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">P.M.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EDT<\/span>\u00a0(8:04\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">P.M.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">PDT<\/span>) on July 4 and end at 1:56\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">A.M.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EDT<\/span>\u00a0on July 5 (10:56\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">P.M.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">PDT<\/span>\u00a0on July\u00a04).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/astronomy\/eclipse-dates\">Learn more about eclipses and find out when the next one will be<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3>WHY IS IT CALLED THE FULL BUCK\u00a0MOON?<\/h3>\n<p>Traditionally, the full Moon in July is called the\u00a0<strong>Buck Moon<\/strong>\u00a0because a buck\u2019s antlers are in full growth mode at this time.
